Hair Restoration Adventures! Lots of photos and technique examples!

So I have A LOT of girls with terrible hair.
There are millions of doll hair tutorials out there, so I’m not making one!
Hahaha I am going to show you what I did though… with photos…
Kinda like a tutorial…
… but it’s not.

ANYWAY

Here are my candidates:
Draculaura was initially a part of this process, but I discovered that I didn’t have any more tiny rubber bands in order to re-create her original pigtails, so after her first brushing, I set her aside for later.
Lagoona was previously loved, and so her hair was very matty, knotted and a hot mess.
Ghoulia‘s hair is actually kinda how it was fresh out of the box!
Obviously, she’s as unhappy with it as I am…

My beloved Kennedy is also being included, because I have been imagining her with curly little pigtails instead of the wavy, half-straight, half-curled style
that she came with fresh out of her box.
As usual, you can see that she loves the attention!

PART 1: BRUSHING
Let’s get their hair huge and poofy, shall we?

Kennedy first, because I had to be extra careful around her hair accessories
to keep them intact.
They lose hair throughout the entire process, that’s fine – they have plenty.
I love love love Monster High doll brushes for this, they don’t make my hands ache and they’re pretty sturdy. Plus, I think I’ve got like ten of them in case one breaks.

Even on the desk beside a keyboard, Ghoulia’s angular features make her look so gorgeous!
She is my favorite MH girl simply because of those sultry looks…. maybe she’s thinking about eating my brains or something….

I brushed out Draculaura’s hair, but that’s as far as she goes
until I can make some glam pigtails for her.

And lastly, Lagoona… I was not looking forward to getting her knots out.
Her previous owner was probably too young to have dolls at all LoL
Somehow, I managed, and she looked relieved!

PART 2: BOUNCY CURLS!
For Kennedy, I wanted really bouncy curls in her pigtails.
She reminds me of Harley Quinn without black and red the costume.
Harley would usually roller skate around in a sexy/cute outfit,
chewing gum and being pulled along by her two pet hyenas…

LOL! I hope you enjoyed that diversion…

So I got some straws, foil, and needles together to use a technique I learned
by watching this tutorial (go ahead and subscribe, she’s awesome):

Finished hair on the right.
I had to do one side at a time because I didn’t want to hurt or melt her sunglasses.

Here’s the remainder of her hair in my make-shift “curlers”

One last dunk in hot water (wait about 3 minutes), then dunk in ice water…
and now, we’ve got those adorable bouncy curls!!

She already has the skates, so now I’ll be on the lookout for some doll-sized pet hyenas!

PART 3: BEACHY WAVES

Lagoona is meant to be from Australia, and loves swimming.
So I decided she definitely needed those loose, summery beachy curls.
I figured that if the above technique produced tight curls, maybe loosening things up and working without the rollers and pins would produce looser curls.
So I simply rolled her hair around pieces of foil as best I could,
using the leftover bits of foil from Kennedy’s hair.
I followed with the same hot and cold water dunk.

“Curlers” in her hair!

During dunking, Lagoona was really helpful,
so I didn’t have to stand there and hold her the whole time! Hahaha

I had her hold her braid out of the water, since I wanted to keep it as it was.

I used my single cup machine to make the hot water more quickly than boiling.

After the ice-dip, I removed her curlers and got exactly what I wanted!
So happy with the result!

PART 4: RETRO ROCKABILLY

Lastly, Ghoulia!
I love Ghoulia’s look, especially when they create rockabilly or pinup-type outfits for her.
I really wanted to make a fun little style that could capture that
“old school meets new school” vibe.
For plain/crimpy looking waves, I did boring little braids all over 🙂
For her bangs, I went with just a couple of simple large curls using leftover foil.

Whoa, that's big hair.

Whoa, that’s big hair.

After doing the hot/cold water dips and releasing the waves,
I took some loose hair from the side of her head, looped it around like a headband,
and used my reroot tool to push it back into her head, under her hair.
The “headband” accentuates some loose strands, but also holds the curls in their place.

A headband of hair!

Kennedy Loves an “All Day Sucker” (Cont. w/more photos & details) – My Scene Retro Glam RollerGirls

I figured that this doll would make a good starter for my blog.
She is my most recent acquisition!

Doll: “My Scene RollerGirls” Kennedy Doll (Mattel, 2006)
Doll Description: Kennedy knows retro fashion is all the rage!
She’s rockin’ a red miniskirt, rainbow striped halter, and awesome accessories!
Why I bought her:
Awesome accessories (including another outfit), Bright colors, and her Controversial look.
This doll’s outfit is crazy sexy, like some kind of cute and quirky lingerie you’d purchase to spice up the bedroom!
She actually came with a cardboard cutout of an all-day sucker… NOT EVEN KIDDING.
The outfit has been made pretty cheaply, too (some uneven seams)…
…but who cares about that when it’s only meant to last for one lap-dance before it’s removed?? LOL

So, to show off the extra outfit and accessories, I brought a My Scene Nolee into the photoshoot to model.
On a side note, Nolee has a belly button piercing!
I’ve pictured it in this post because it’ll probably never get its own blog post, but it’s still interesting in regards to the My Scene target audience age, which I believe is meant to be 7-12 year olds!
I’m not sure what Mattel was thinking, or if they were thinking at all, but I wonder if Nolee’s “hidden bling” was even something parents would notice before buying.
I mean, you can see above how hectic and distracting the RollerGirls boxing looks!
Image
Nolee is just an extra doll of mine that came in a lot I purchased some time ago.
She still needs a bit of work (some marks that are not easily removed by cleaning),
but she is the only My Scene type that I had handy.
Her black bracelet was already on, and her shoes are Target Exclusive Barbie Basics Red & White strappy heels.
The rest of the outfit came with Kennedy.
So for my last picture, here they are together!
I hope that you have enjoyed my first post, feel free to leave comments and let me know what you think!
